Chuck Schumer gets blasted over response to Trump’s new National Guard deployment

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is facing scrutiny on social media over his response to President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to the city of Portland.

Trump announced on Saturday that he is sending troops to “protect War ravaged Portland” and “any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists” at the request of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The state of Oregon and the city have since sued the Trump administration to block the federalization of the National Guard, arguing that the move is an unconstitutional abuse of power.

During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Schumer was asked by host Kristen Welker on Sunday if there is anything he can do to stop the deployment in Congress.

“First, we’ll fight it in the courts. Along with, you know, people who will file suits,” Schumer said.

He added: “But second, I would hope, Kristen, that some of our Republican colleagues — I know they’re loyal to Trump and does whatever he wants — but this is so far stepping over the line that I hope some of them would join us in legislation to prevent it from happening. We have such a proposal. I’m part of it.”

Schumer’s response was met with immediate scrutiny from Democrats.

“Schumer’s plan: We’re going to beat authoritarianism by deploying serious disappointment in our esteemed GOP colleagues!” progressive political commentator Sam Seder wrote on X.

Civil rights attorney Scott Hechinger wrote that “Chuck Schumer is the worst possible leader for this moment.”

“Future historians will understand that the key factor in the slide to authoritarianism in the US was the complete absence of an opposition party; instead we had whatever this is,” historian Moshik Temkin posted.

Another user said: “Democratic Leadership (leading): I hope the people responsible for this suddenly change their minds.”

“This was his second idea behind building a campfire and singing kumbaya. WTF are we even doing with this guy anymore?” a different user asked.

Schumer’s comments come as he joins other congressional leaders in a last-minute meeting with Trump at the White House on Monday — with less than two days left to avoid a government shutdown. During an interview with CNN, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) suggested that the president will attempt to push Democrats toward accepting a GOP plan, without the extension of the soon-to-expire Obamacare tax credits that Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are proposing.

Trump deployed National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., in August, and has threatened to do the same in a number of cities with Democratic mayors, including Chicago and Baltimore. He also created a federal task force earlier this month in Memphis.
